Road Trip

Day 5

We started off our morning driving around to see Coober Pedy. The town looks pretty empty but when you look at the hills, you can see pipes sticking out of the ground to ventilate the underground houses. We then stopped at an underground Catholic Church and an underground Serbian church for the grandmas to look at. We then headed out.

We drove from Coober Pedy to Wilmington. We drove about 550km to get there. Along the way we got to see more desert b the longest section without trees or much for shrubs. We did stop at Lake Hart which is a salt lake. The shore of the lake is all hard dried salt with about a foot of water in the lake. Mike and I walked in to wet our feet. The water was surprisingly cold and salt along the bottom was hard and crystallized. The water was so clear and still that it mirrored the clouds. The salt used to be mined and the remains of the old tracks are still there and look quite surreal coming out of the mirrored lake. The military now uses the area as a bombing range.

Wilmington has beautiful countryside with green hills and large gnarled trees. It is such a contrast to the red desert we spent the last few days in. It had rained here all last week so it is very green and there is some running water near the camp site. Just before bed, we saw a possum sitting in a tree just hanging out. She was very cute and not shy at all.
