Kata Tjuta and Uluru

Day 3

We got up early the next morning to watch the sunrise beside Uluru. It was quite chilly and the standing platform was not designed well but it was very much worth it. Uluru really does change colour  depending on how the sun hits it. It was an amazing start to the day. After that we drove to Kata Tjuta.

Kata Tjuta is a very beautiful place but not too much is known about the aboriginal stories of the area. It is a sacred site for men but women were allowed in to harvest food so pictures are allowed in the area. It had a very different feel than Uluru. Isabel an I agreed it had more of a feminine feel than Uluru and was softer and gentler. We walked through the whole area which was 7.4 km. the valley of the winds was extremely windy but very beautiful. We also got to see wild zebra finch and wild budgie birds. It was pretty amazing to see them in their wild habitat after growing up with them as pets.

After finishing the walk around Kata Tjuta, we went back to camp for lunch. We had some free time, so Mike, Martina, Cathy and I checked out the camels. Cathy went for a camel ride and we watched the camels laying around. They really are a unique creature.

After lunch, we finished the rest of the Uluru base walk, which was about another 5km. This side was much more enjoyable since we were so far away from it. I was actually able to touch it. It felt amazing. We also walked to a water hole that was very serene and beautiful. I also managed to get a picture of shadows from the rocks that formed a face and the shadow of a pregnant woman. It was also at the site where there is a dreamtime story about a pregnant snake women who had to defend some kin. I noticed that all along Uluru, you could make out faces in the holes and shapes of the rock. It definitely had a lot of character.

Afterwards we drove back to our camp and prepped for dinner. We then walked about 10 minutes in our campground to watch the sunset over Uluru from a different perspective. It was amazing to watch again. We had a wonderful dinner afterward and another beautiful starry night.
