Rainy Sydney Day

Just letting all who are following the storm over here that we are ok. Just rain here and nothing major happening.

We went to the Australia Day fireworks after my last post which were amazing. They had music and laser lights along with the fireworks. The next day was when it started to rain so we went to the free museum of contemporary art. It was awesome. They had an exhibit called Taboo which was focused on racism and sexism throughout history. Very powerful artwork. They had a room with military drums hanging from the ceiling with hats, boots and guns. They would periodically start drumming, which occurred by a computer mechanism, and it was very haunting. You could feel the cadence in your bones and feel the fear and sadness that the drums instilled, which I imagine the aboriginals felt. It was definitely an exhibit that weighed heavy emotionally. After that exhibit was Australian artists which were very unique and interesting.

We made some friends at the hostel that we went to the fireworks and the art museum with. Jakob from New York, Caitlin from California, Max from Paris, Katie from New Zealand, Saja from Finland, Ben from Yorkshire, Dave from Perth, and Francesco from Italy. They are a great bunch of people and a lot of fun.

We went out with Ben, Caitlin, Jakob, Dave and Max last night to a five story club. We went to the top floor on the balcony and had a great view of the city. We then went down a few floors to play pool. As we went down the stairs, each landing had a picture window box with scenes in them. One had drunken polar bears, one had an octopus on the moon, and one had a garden of Eden scene. It was pretty neat. At about midnight we left and went over to a shop called Pie Face and had a late snack. I couldn't believe how many stores were still open that late. We walked by a tattoo shop that was open until 2am! There were a lot of people out last night, which was the last night to party with Monday being a holiday.
