Alice Springs

We flew from Brisbane to Sydney for the night and caught our flight to Alice Springs at 6 am. We stayed up all night sitting on a bench outside the airport after spending a few hours in a McDonald's. we met a really nice German at the airport while we were waiting.

When we landed in Alice, it felt like we were on another planet. After spending 5 months on the east coast near beaches, trees and rainforest it was a huge contrast to be in the red desert with shrubs. The landscape is so unique. It was surprising cold out as well. The temperature drops at night to about 3-7 degrees and warms up to about 16-20 at noon. Heaters are not common either.

We went on a day tour that our hostel offered to see the city before we left the next day. We had only one day here unfortunately but we would like to go back in the future and spending some more time. Our tour started at the telegraph station. It was the first settlement in Alice Spring and provided communication through the centre of Australia from Darwin to Adelaide via telegraph. The buildings were very cool and they still had some of the original telegraph lines. The settlement eventually became a school for the aboriginal children from the stolen generation.

We then went to the reptile centre. We got a presentation on the reptiles and got to hold some after. I held a blue tongued skink, a bearded dragon and an olive python. It was really cool. Mike also held all three. They also had other snakes to look at, a few were very poisonous but behind glass. We also got to see lizards, geckos and a salt water croc named Terry.

After that we went to an area near the rock wall where we got to hand feed wild rock wallabies. They were super cute and so soft. I ended up feeding 4 or 5 of them. Two of the wallabies had joeys in their pouches who were super cute. It was pretty amazing.

We then went to watch the sunset on Anzac hill which offered an amazing view. You could see the city in all directions and the sunset was beautiful. The incline was quite steep to get up and would be a great workout to do everyday. Luckily we drove up the hill. We had a wonderful day and got to see a bit before we left on our 6 day tour from Alice Springs to Adelaide.
