Rainbow Beach

We stayed in Rainbow Beach the day before we left for Fraser Island and the day we came back. It was a cute little beach town. It is named after the various colours of sand at the beach ranging from yellow to red and to brown. It is claimed there are about 70 different colours of sand that can be found. The scientific explanation of the various colours of sand is due to an ancient forest being broken down over time and various minerals resulted in the different colours. Th aboriginal myth is that there was a black princess who fell in love with the rainbow and would meet him at the beach. A jealous warrior used his killing boomerang against the rainbow and shattered it on the beach where is died.

We went on a bush walk to a sand blow where we went sand boarding, heard the myth of the beach and threw boomerangs. The sand blow was amazing and it was surreal to think that under all the sand we were walking on was an ancient buried forest. Sand boarding was fun and resulted in sand everywhere! I did pretty good with throwing the boomerang. It didn't return to me but I was able to throw it with a curve and it went behind me. Mike managed to throw his off the cliff end and lost it. Luckily it was the broken boomerang. We watched the sunset after all the activities, which was absolutely beautiful.

On the bush walk we made friends with some of the group that would be joining us on Fraser. We met Denise from Switzerland, Harry, Zoƫ, Freya, Lauren and Olivia from England, Mads and Soren from Denmark, Henry from Boston and Matthias from Germany.
